Battle certainly warped its fair share of young minds. Apparently Garth Ennis was a fan as a kid, which explains a lot.

You are correct sir he is a ringer for Crusher Creel but in fact he's Darkie of "Darkie's Mob" fame.
As for the monkey, he eventually slips his leash and goes on to rule all Japan! Mwahahahahaha!
